Study in abroad _ MFA+@

YISUP 2017. 9. 15. 10:48

I am here in the US to continue my study in MFA course. But this is the question. Since I already had my first MFA in Korea, what value can I give to this second spot? Is this only an extension of prior one?

Before RISD, I was teaching art at a high school in my home land. During a year long as being a teacher, I had incessant interact with my students. They were young and vibrant and always curious about the world. At that time, I was a teacher but also a grad student in art school, and was an artist. As I was teaching in a high school where most of the students were preparing for college, my students were nervous about it. College was a sensitive issue for them. I was a teacher and at the same time a college student, they asked me a lot about college life. We had a tour of my college, showing them how college students are working and what studio looks like, given a chance to talk and imagine about future of themselves. This was part of the class but it was more than that. Talking with the younger generation, especially who is in starting point of the similar path as I reminded me of my days before, thoughts I had, an expectation which some of them turned into real while some are not. Officially what I did was teaching, but an experience of being a mature adult as a tutor changed process of thinking and talking. I had to force my students in designated direction, at the same time always had to step back carefully in order to maintain distance which gave them the room for question about everything, including the direction. I had to be prepared to give an answer or discuss the issues they ask me, therefore, I learned responsibility. This changed my life significantly because I started to felt my life and myself as something important, I searched for what I want rather than what is better.

If I was the US citizen, this 2-year studying at RISD chance would be no more than Masters degree. But this case is different to me. As a person who belonged entire life in Korea, South, I was definitely Asia woman. My language, structure of thinking, logic, a process of accepting surroundings, everything was based on East Asian life. I grow up in space which has a history of division by two distinct sovereign state but has deep relevant to other countries, and now arrived here in America. Not only study, I have to live a life in here. This will build a new structure of logic, a process of reading and writing, ways of adopting surroundings, as a result, create another identity in mine. By this way, I will be able to compare myself with myself, hold critical vision inside me.
